What We BelieveWe believe that the Bible is God’s inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and that His Word is the basis for our faith.
We believe that the church is to be comprised of a body of believers in Jesus Christ. We believe in a literal death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior and we believe that He will return at God’s appointed time to call His bride home. Our Pastor
Kevin McCarthy and his wife Michelle
Michelle and I are happy to be serving God here in Chanute, we believe God has a heart for the people in Chanute and this same love has been given to us. Our journey through ministry has taken us to several different churches in several different states, although the bulk of our ministry has been here in Southeast Kansas. Kansas is a far different area than where I grew up in Brooklyn, the main difference is whether should I say “Yous Guys” or “Ya’ll”. Michelle was raised in a military family and had the opportunity to live in several states as well as in Italy for a few years. God is using all of these experiences to aid us in ministering to the community around Westview. We would love to have you join us as we seek to Shine His Light in Chanute.
Our HistoryIn October 1960 Gerald and Ermal Locke, Home Mission Board Missionaries drove through Chanute. They observed at that time the area was a mission field ripe unto harvest. The Lockes worked with two summer missionaries in the summer of 1961. They did a telephone survey indicating 11 percent of those called would like to attend a Southern Baptist Church.February 1962 Gerald and the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Coffeyville, KS visited Chanute. The Mahon Morley family agreed to hold the first fellowship in their home. At the first meeting, two people became members of the fellowship. In June 1962, the Southern Baptist Mission held its first public worship service in the Seventh Day Adventist Church Building. In August, a 3-story house was rented and classes were held on all three floors. In October that year, the group purchased 3 acres on South Plummer with a $1,000 grant from the Home Mission Board and $6,000 in borrowed money. At the time, Westview Chapel was the name chosen for the mission. God supplied the needs for the groundbreaking that took place July 1963. November 1, 1963 church services were held. On Dedication Day, December 1, 1963, 94 persons attended. Westview with a long history of doing so, still desires to have a strong witness for Christ in Chanute. |
